It was going to be an uphill battle for the Yoogali side who were going to need win by at least two goals and looked the better of the two sides before ANU were able to open the scoring on the counter.
Coach Sante Donadel felt that from that point the game went down hill.
"When we started the first 25 minutes was really good and when their first goal went in I think it was all over," he said.
"They put their heads down a little bit and ANU started to take control of the game.
"It is a credit to the boys to how hard they have worked every game but unfortunately that isn't good enough and that is why we have come fifth instead of being in the top four."
Donadel feels that is the consistency that has let the side down even though the side had shown plenty of promise throughout the season.
"We have played some good games this year but our consistency is what has killed us," he said.
"Even in terms of players on the field, we had two or three different players on the field again today. Having Andrew Vitucci pull out right before the game hurt us as well."
The under 23s coach is hopeful that with the right guidance the side will make the steps required to reach the finals series next year.
"They have all turned up to training each week and we had a good squad. Luke (Santolin) has done most of the training anyway so I have basically been the caretaker," he said.
"If hopefully we can find someone to just take the 23s next year they would be a lot better because they need someone with a bit of time and a bit of drive.
"I don't have that drive anymore and I can't expect the players to have that drive if I haven't got it and I think that could be half the problem as well."
