Sharks swim to Premiership
After 80 minutes of some of the toughest football you'll see, Tullibigeal-Lakes United has come through to claim the Group 20 premiership 14-8 over West Wyalong.
The buzzer sparked mass celebrations from the players and the large contingent of Sharks supporters who had made the trip to EW Moore Oval on a wet, cold day.
TLU captain-coach Tim Ring said the win was a special one.
"It hasn't sunk in yet, to be honest," Ring said after the game.
"I've been there and won it before but it feels so much more special this year - being underdogs at the start of the year. You can have a team of superstars but you can't buy blokes wanting to play for one another, it's as simple as that."
The Sharks were first on the board when Ethan Williams crossed.
Whilst TLU never surrendered the lead for the remainder of the match, West Wyalong was always within striking distance.
Halfway through the first half, the Mallee Men hit back when Sam Kerry pounced on a grubber.
The conversion was missed and the score would remain the same until half-time.
In the opening 10 minutes of the second half, the momentum swayed between the two sides as the rain played havoc on ball handling.
Momentum was first with West Wyalong before it swung TLU's way which led to a try to Ring who dove on a spilt kick to give the Sharks a six-point buffer.
Once again, it took a few minutes but West Wyalong hit back when Justin Kerry scored in the right corner.
TLU was given a scrum after the resulting kick-off from a mistake.
The Sharks weren't able to score but they kept the ball up Wyalong's end for a chunk of time as the Mallee Men tried everything - even a kick from a scrum - to get out of their own end.
Four minutes from time, Jesse Phillips scored from a kick to seal the win.
Ring said he always knew West Wyalong was going to put up a huge fight.
"It was always going to be a tough game," Ring said.
"We know Wyalong - they don't lay down, they just keep coming and coming.
"We needed to expect that and we gave it our all."
