It took the home side 12 minutes to crack the scoreboard, but once Jerry Navia barged his way over, there was little stopping the Phantoms.

Vereti Tupou, Eroni Naua and Paul Ta'avao crossed in the span of 10 minutes before Daniel Bozic scored a quickfire double before halftime to see the Phantoms leading 47-0 at the break.

The points kept flowing for the Phantoms in the second half with Tupou crossing for his second five minutes in before Viliame Lateaucolo and Johnson Porgkali dived over to push the margin past 60 points. The Phantoms wrapped the game up the game with Tupou completing his hat-trick while Naua finished with a double in the home side's 81-point victory.

Club president John Hill was pleased with the way the side came together after looking like they would be struggling for numbers.

"The boys were keen to come out and have a run, and we had plenty of numbers here today which was pleasing," he said.

"It has been a bit of a battle, and we didn't know what kinds of numbers we would have leading up today. Even over the last two or three weeks, we had only been having 10 or 15 at training and slowly building up, and then on Thursday we had 35-odd people at training, and then most of them turned up today.

"From the club's position it looks really good, and hopefully next year we might be able to carry those players through."

While being happy with the result, Hill said there were a number of other good things to come out of the first game of the season.

"We had a father-son combination run out there in the Graham family, and we had a couple of young kids who are only 17 coming through that really showed a bit of flair and played really well today," he said.

"I know it is a bit difficult when we are playing second grade instead of playing firsts, and we do have first-grade players running around out there, but it is about giving the younger guys an opportunity to get a bit of guidance from the better players and the older guys."
