COURTHOUSE UPGRADE NOT YET FINISHED
It is pleasing to hear that residents of Griffith care about the appearance of the buildings and spaces of their city.

We, as the architects, encourage them to await the completion of the new extension to the courthouse.
The "corrugated iron" referred to by your correspondent, is in fact a substrate and the final cladding will be in zinc a very traditional material which is being used in a contemporary way.
We appreciate the heritage of our profession that is shown through buildings like the original Griffith Courthouse and look to build on that tradition.
There is a strong visual separation between the new extension and original Griffith Courthouse that leaves the original building's primary facades undisturbed.
The new extension is constructed of brick with the upper portion clad in zinc.
The materials are traditional, the design contemporary, as is befitting a City like Griffith that is both of the past and looking towards the future.
We look forward to hearing the community's responses once the building is complete.

SOME FACTS ABOUT CHINA'S MARCH
Regarding Yvonne Rance's letter on China (The Area News, July 20). Australia's democracy, based on the Westminster system, is a secular democracy.
Separation of Church and state is enshrined in the constitution. Christian and other values, provide a moral, foundation for our laws.
China is governed by the leader of the Chinese Communist Party, which rules with a very strong hand. A "Republican Dictator" is not a correct description.
The treatment of Hong Kong protesters was shameful, however thousands were not gunned down.
The 1889 Tiananmen Square incident (1,100 deaths) is a terrible stain on China's history.
China, USA and Russian military might is on display on national occasions. I don't admire this behaviour.
China is being aggressive, particularly in the South China sea.
Sensible diplomacy, like that exercised by New Zealand, will achieve a stronger outcome than the churlish foot stomping currently emanating from Canberra.
Australia has profited handsomely through trade in food and other agriculture products, minerals, manufacturing, tourism, education and health services.
Most of these products and services are obtainable elsewhere.
China is not reliant on Australia. It has taken 45 years of work from governments to build our trade and cultural ties with China.
It is naive to believe alternative markets for $79 billion of exports can be easily replaced.China is not going to retreat to a submissive middle kingdom, because we disagree with their policies.
We need to take a lead from New Zealand and not resort to an unproductive, Sinophobic response that will cause ongoing diplomatic tensions, and economic problems for manufacturers and farmers.

'IT'S BEEN AN ABSOLUTE PLEASURE'
Saying goodbye is something I am absolutely not good at, especially when it comes to leaving a city I hold close to my heart like Griffith.
After one year at The Area News, I am leaving the paper to pursue a new opportunity over in the United Kingdom.
It has been an absolute pleasure to help serve the community and experience the highs and the lows of this past year with you.
To all those I have worked alongside, and to all those I have spoken with over the past year - thank you for letting me into your lives and the memories we have shared will remain with me for years to come.
From the wonderful meat pies at Bertoldo's to the fantastic sights of the city's Scenic Hill, I will truly miss everything Griffith has to offer and the people who make this city so special.
I hope to be back soon one day in the near future, but until we meet again - thank you, and goodbye.
