We don't usually get much say in how either of those unpleasant things goes. To be fair, talking about death is far from something most of us want to do, or even consider.
However, right now, residents around the district have every opportunity to make their voices heard about where their body will spend the rest of eternity.
A second cemetery has been on the cards for years, and a crematorium for the city has been desired in Griffith for even longer.
Both these projects are finally on the horizon, and there's only a few days left if you want to tell council, and then councillors where their priorities should be.
Many in the community want to see the crematorium featured in the first stage of the second cemetery, for some it's about belief, others about preference.
But whether it's because of preference or religious belief, putting a submission into council about when they should get to work on the crematorium is important.
How else can they know what the community wants? A crematorium isn't the only issue that council will need to consider.
The consultation process is about residents telling them exactly that, and while the cynics may mock the process, it can add value.
But like many things in life, it relies on participation and taking the time to let people making decisions know what's important.
You can make a submission through Griffith City Council's website here. Submissions are due by July 31.
