Community groups, not-for-profit organisations and sporting bodies in the Griffith City Council area affected by the pandemic will have access to a new Relief Grant program.
Testoni hoped that the program would help out the sporting bodies who are going through a tough time.
"Most sports that are out there that had already started have got bills they have to pay," Testoni said.
"Basketball, for instance, we still have bills with NSW Basketball that you have to pay on a monthly basis even when you don't have income coming through.
"At the end of the day sports and tourism are huge, and if it doesn't get going again, towns can suffer it's not just the sports so ideal it is a good thing to happen."
A maximum of $5000 is available for each eligible application, with the funds to be used for projects aimed at assisting organisations affected by the COVID-19 lockdown.
At the Extraordinary Meeting of Council on May 5, Councillor Doug Curran put forward a Notice of Motion suggesting a number of strategies to assist residents and businesses severely affected by COVID-19, including the new Relief Grant.
"Council recognises that organisations and community groups delivering essential services to the local community have been impacted during the pandemic," Cr Curran said.
"Under this new Grant, we have made a total of $100,000 available. This is just one of the ways we are supporting our community during these exceptional times."
The COVID-19 Relief Grant will open on 1 July 2020 and close when available funds are exhausted. Each of the applications received will be assessed monthly and approved by council.
To be eligible, applicants must provide details of how the COVID-19 lockdown has impacted their organisation and how the funds will address that impact. Application forms can be found on the Griffith City Council website or by contacting council.
