AFL Riverina chairman Michael Irons informed clubs on Wednesday that a decision will be made on the viability of 2020 season after a series of meetings later this month.
AFL Riverina will meet with senior and juniors clubs on June 22 and 23, where they can inform the board of their position on a prospective shortened season.
Clubs will provide their final positions, 'in or out', to AFL Riverina a week later at a June 29 meeting, before the board makes a call on the season on June 30.
Irons has provided clubs with AFL Riverina's 'Guiding Principles for Season 2020' that will help determine whether a season goes ahead.
Crowd size is number one on a list that also includes guidelines for return to play and operating a canteen and bar, team nominations, affiliation costs and more.
AFL Riverina have set July 18 as the proposed season start date, pending state government approval on a return to adult community sport.
Irons hopes the new timeline can provide clubs with some clarity moving forward.
"The June 22-23 meetings are just milestone meetings in our path towards returning to play," Irons said.
"It will be an opportunity for clubs to update clubs with information from the Government and AFL and for clubs to share their position and thoughts and ask any questions on topics or issues that they need clarification on."
AFL Riverina has also decided that clubs will not be penalised if they withdraw from the 2020 season.
Irons also stated AFL Riverina will do what it can to provide some form of competition for all clubs who wish to play in 2020, subject to return to play approval.
When questioned whether clubs from outside leagues would be permitted to join, Irons did not close the door on the idea.
"We'll consider any approach," he said.
Meantime, the Wagga and District and South West junior competitions are set to get underway on July 18 and 19.
