Renee Tropea and her partner Matt turned to technology to help connect with family who weren't able to be there to celebrate their daughter Charlee's first birthday.

"We 'facetimed' my mum and sister when we cut the cake," she said.

"I talk to them daily but it's not the same."

Ms Tropea has enjoyed spending time with her daughter, but said not being able to catch up with friends and family had been a challenge.

"It's been difficult, not being able to get out and talk to people," she said.

"I take Charlee everywhere in the pram, and leave her in the pram when we come home so I can sanitise myself before touching her again.

"I can't wait to see my mum, sister and nephews, that will be the first thing we do after the restrictions are lifted."

The support of an active mothers' group has been beneficial and those catch-ups have now moved online. Charlee gets excited when she sees the other children through the screen.

Ms Tropea said it was always nice to get a coffee, even if was only a quick catch up.

"It was always nice even if we had a bad night, no one cared," Ms Tropea said.

"Our last catch up was a bit tricky because all the kids were crawling everywhere.

"I'll be keen to catch up with mothers group friends, I think a lot of kids will be celebrating their first birthday in isolation."

Before physical distancing measures came into place the group met twice a week.

Ms Tropea said families with newborns needed support of their families as it could be a challenging time for parents, and the pandemic has made it tougher.

"I'm happy that Charlee is young and she's quite happy to stay inside, but I feel for people who are stuck in apartments in cities with no backyard," she said.

"Isolation is horrible when you're a new mum and you can't have people come around."

"I was lucky enough to have mum here for a month when Charlee was born, but I'm not sure how we would have gone otherwise."
