The Coro Cougars have secured their third piece of GDCA first grade silverware after the decision was made to hand them the title after the season was cancelled before the finals series could be completed.
The GDCA board made the tough decision to bring the season to an early conclusion after strong recommendations were handed down from Cricket Australia on March 17.
At that stage, there were three teams remaining in the first grade competition with Exies Eagles set to take on Exies Diggers to see who would join the Cougars in the grand final.
They never had the chance, and with the Coro side finishing the season as minor premier they were awarded the first grade premiership by default and secured the Cougars second treble, six years after their first, which was also the last time the side won the two-day title.
Coro skipper Haydn Pascoe admitted it was a strange situation to be in.
"It's probably not the ideal way to win it, but I guess it is what it is," he said.
"It sort of shows that the last game (in the regular season) for us against Diggers was a pretty important game when it came down to it."
It was a tight run battle throughout the season with Diggers, and that round 19 outright win for the Cougars was the determining factors with the sides separated by just seven points.
Pascoe praised the way his side came together all season.
"Even in the finals it never came down to an individual performance it always came down to a team performance," he said.
"We were all pretty consistent throughout the year and that sort of shows when you finish on top of the ladder."
The Coro skipper had a strong season in his return from injury which saw him finish with 598 runs which saw him 191 runs in front of second-placed teammate Dean Bennett.
" I had a pretty handy season, but I was just happy to be back out there," he said.
Meanwhile, in the lower grades, Exies Diggers were able to take out second and fourth grade after finishing as minor premiers in both those grades while the Cougars took out the third grade premiership for the fourth time in five seasons.
The GDCA presentation night has also had to be cancelled with award winners to be announced shortly.
