Non-essential indoor gatherings of more than 100 people have been banned under the new regulations, with the decision forcing the indefinite closure of the Griffith Regional Theatre.

As of March 17, the theatre had already either cancelled or postponed a majority of their events as well as implemented measures to cap attendances, but under the new regulations the theatre has had to shut the doors until further notice.

Ticket holders for performances are being offered refunds or a transfer of their tickets to the rescheduled performance where possible.

Griffith's Regional Art Gallery will remain open during normal operating hours, but all current and upcoming public programs - including the gallery's Family Fun Day and a planned public launch for the Art Express exhibition - has been cancelled.

The city's aquatic centre will remain open, but membership refunds are being made available for all sessions.

Under the new restrictions imposed by the federal government, gyms, indoor fitness centres and swimming pools are not required to close provided they meet requirements for social distancing and hand hygiene.

Council's general manager Brett Stonestreet said council was liaising with other government agencies to ensure a best practice response.

"It is disappointing to have to cancel our events and close facilities," Mr Stonestreet said.

"But these decisions will not be made lightly."

The meeting of Griffith City Council scheduled for March 24 will proceed, but a decision regarding future meetings will be made after council liases further with NSW Health and the state's Office of Local Government.
