The Griffith Lau community have donated $2000 to Griffith Can Assist to show their thanks after one of their members - Selaema Tuibenau - was diagnosed with cancer.
Ms Tuibenau said Can Assist helped her pay for accommodation while undergoing treatment in Sydney for cancer in 2018 and now cancer-free, the donation was a way to show her thanks for their support.
"It's a big help that they do for everybody," Ms Tuibenau said.
"They were willing to pay for airfare and all those things... they helped me out [and] I appreciate that."
The community raised the funds through the hosting of an island night at the Hanwood Catholic Club.
Can Assist president Olga Forner said she was "grateful" for the donation and the funds will be used to help take care of other families affected by cancer in the city.
"It just goes to show that they haven't forgotten what was done," Mrs Forner said.
