Questions as to the nature and ownership of the public car-park along Railway Street were raised during a council discussion on the minutes of a Transport Committee meeting.

According to the minutes of the Transport Committee meeting of February 10, 'numerous complaints' about the amount of vehicles parked in the public car-park east of the Griffith Police Station have been made to council.

Councillor Brian Simpson queried as to the grounds of the complaints during Tuesday's meeting and Councillor Simon Croce said while he was unsure as to the problem raised by the complaints, the car-park has been increasingly used by travelling workers.

"Traditionally that's usually not that well patronized that car park," Cr Croce said.

"But with the solar plant in operation there is just a mass of cars turn up first thing in the morning.

"Buses take the people away [to work] and then most of them disappear at night."

Mayor John Dal Broi said the land used for parking is not entirely under the ownership of council.

"There's only one block of land towards the old ambulance station that belongs to council," Councillor Dal Broi said.

Council's infrastructure and operations director Phil King confirmed council only owns a small section of the land used as a car-park.

"Currently we are using it [the council-owned land] as a car-park but the rest of the land is privately owned," Mr King said.

"That is where the complaint was made, around the use of that land and how that's facilitated and what that would mean if certain things were to happen on that parcel of land."

Councillor Mike Neville said the car-park is also regularly used by employees of the police station despite having an area "inside the compound that they can utilise" and this had also contributed to a higher amount of vehicles using the facility.
