Twenty-two of Griffith's talented young athletes headed off to Shellharbour on February 1 and 2 to compete in the 2020 Region Four Track and Field Championship and experienced great results.

But the highlight to come out of the weekend was the caring nature shown by young long-distance runner Angelo Licastro. Angelo's magnificent display of sportsmanship spread far and wide within days of him participating in the under 12s boys 1500m race.
During the race, one of his fellow competitors from the Northern Illawarra District was experiencing breathing difficulties due to asthma, and Angelo stopped his progress to offer assistance.
Back on track and it was an excellent event for the Griffith competitors in conditions that were quite demanding across the two-day event. The Griffith athletes put all of their hard work and training into practice to gain success against their city and country counterparts.
The Griffith team finished with three first places, eight seconds and six thirds while many other athletes only just missed out on podium places. John Favero was also able to set a new regional record in the under 12 boys 80m hurdles with a time of 15.72.
Six of the Griffith team secured automatic qualification for the NSW State Little Athletics Championship to be held at Olympic Park in Sydney in March.
Mary Dal Broi will compete in the under 10s girls long jump and 800m, Connor Hutchins in the under 10 boys Shot Put and Discus, John Favero in the under 12 boys Shot Put and 80m hurdles, Gemma Pastro in the under 17s girls Shot Put, Ethan Donetto in the under 17s boys 400m and 200m and Jack Fry in the under 17s boys 110m hurdles and 800m.
Alynta Watts in the under 12s 1500m walk and Mitalia Tanuvasa in the under 13s girls discuss could also make the trip to Sydney depending on results from the other regional carnivals.
