The Griffith Local Health Advisory Committee (LHAC) is urging community members who are passionate about their local health care to consider joining the committee.

Chairwoman of Griffith's LHAC Margaret King said the committee is looking for applicants from all walks of life and while the base time commitment is only two hours a month, the role can be one where you can get more out of it depending on how much you put in.

"We are looking for someone who has a real passion and interest in healthcare," Mrs King said.

"People who can bring their own ideas and are very productive."

Mrs King said the LHAC managed a number of projects in 2019 and aims to keep other projects going forward into the future as they act as a "conduit" between the community and the Murrumbidgee Local Health District (MLHD).

"We have numerous projects on the go," Mrs King said.

"In 2019, we delivered the Compassionate Communities project, hosted a LHAC forum, raised awareness on prostate cancer, breast screening, dementia, and maternal health services, and provided important feedback for the ongoing development of the Griffith Base Hospital."

MLHD community engagement manager Setchen Brimson said the committee works hard to raise access and awareness levels of health services around the city.

"Every town across the District has their own health challenges," Mrs Brimson said.

"Each LHAC comes up with their own unique ways to prioritise and tackle health issues in their communities.

"The key to being a good advocate is the ability to have your finger on the pulse of your local community and the ability to represent these community needs and concerns when you're at the discussion table."
