Coming before Griffith Local Court for shoplifting and breaching a community corrections order, Michael Joseph Atkinson was given prison terms for both.
Turning 39 on Wednesday, he appeared in court over an audio visual link from custody after his bond was revoked.
The charge related to an theft in September where Atkinson stole a bottle of perfume from a local chemist valued at $89.
His legal representative Jack Murray outlined a series of unfortunate events from Atkinson's life which had given him a new outlook.
Atkinson's mother passed away while he was in prison and while able to attend the funeral, being in handcuffs for the proceedings put things into perspective.
"He said it was a real wake up call," Mr Murray explained.
He also asked the court to consider the length of time of took for formal charges to be laid over the theft, proving a disadvantage to his client in being unable to plead guilty.
Sergeant Jason Dunn for the prosecution did admit that police had "trouble" serving him with the charges.
With the incident occurring in September last year, he was only appearing before court in January, which Mr Murray submitted was a "genuine procedural disadvantage".
Magistrate Joy Boulos said the shoplifting offence occurred just days after she sentenced him to a 12 month corrections order for the possession of a prohibited weapon.

She outlined his "extensive" criminal history, with offences he had already served prison terms for, which meant he had well and truly crossed the line for a prison term.
His bond for possessing prohibited weapons was revoked and replaced with a six month prison sentence.
Atkinson was also given a three month term for the shoplifting charge, which is to be served at the same time.
