From chemical use to "senseless" acts of vandalism on bee hives, Mr Cunial is adamant in his fight to protect the precious asset vital to the state's multi-billion dollar horticulture and nut industries.

The vice president of NSW Apiarist Association has taken part in a brave rescue of bees from near the Snowy Mountains area.

With road closures in effect until a brief period on New Years Day, he and a team made a mad dash taking advantage of an opening to grab the bees and run, making it just in time before the roads were closed back up.

"We had to make a mercy dash to the mountains," he explained.

"The bush fires have impacted beekeepers on a level we haven't seen before."

Flow on effects from the devastating loss of bees from the widespread fires in prime bee keeping country will be felt for "a number of years".

With areas around Griffith, Hay, Darlington Point and Narrandera now a safe haven for countless hives from across the burning state, he is asking for cotton farmers to "rethink" using the chemical Fipronil.

The chemical is banned in around 49 countries including most of Europe.

"Bees can travel up to 10 kilometers away from hives," he explained.

"We have nothing against cotton growers and have a good relationship working hand in hand.

"With so many bees along the river, we just ask cotton growers to rethink their use of that chemical."

From drought, fires, to the dangers of chemical use, the last thing anyone expected to have to deal with are "senseless" acts of vandalism on bee hives.

Mr Cunial is still shocked to see two acts of bee hives being destroyed in the past week.

While not his hives, he has felt the destruction on a deep level.

"We've been conducting surveys, contacting [NSW Apiarist Association] members to try to get a real picture of the damage from the drought and the fires," he explained.

"Then you get something which is just - the damage is not huge but the senselessness is mind-boggling."
