It comes after Family and Community services were notified of a Griffith mother who left two children under the age of four asleep in the car on Banna Avenue on Tuesday.
Police received an anonymous call after a bystander saw a woman leave her car to enter a shop, leaving two children behind.
Officers came urgently with the temperature in the high 30 degrees, and found the children, aged one and two, in the running car with the air conditioning going.
The 32-year-old mother told police she left them in the car because they were both asleep, and she wasn't going to be long.
There have been matters in the past in NSW where children and vehicles have been left unattended for a short period of time which have resulted in serious consequences such as carjackings.
- Sergeant Cherie Knox
Police informed the mother that a report would be made to Family and Community Service for children at risk.
She was warned, but no further action was taken.
Sergeant Cherie Knox urged parents to never leave children unattended in the car, as heat trauma was not the only possible consequence.
"Heat is not the only risk when leaving your children unattended in the car," Sergeant Knox said.
"There have been matters in the past in NSW where children and vehicles have been left unattended for a short period of time which have resulted in serious consequences such as carjackings.
"This could and has happened in the past, resulting in the worst possible outcome."

The possible tickets relating to these crimes include leaving the car running, not locking doors and/or not securing the vehicle when unattended, and not removing the ignition key while vehicle is unattended.
"Apart from collecting over $300 in fines you could lose your children," Sergeant Knox said.
Contact Griffith Police Station on 6969 4299 or call 000 if you see children left in cars.
