Murrumbidgee Regional High School outranked Marian Catholic College in terms of overall Band 6 results, with eleven students on the honour roll as opposed to Marian's six.
However the highest ATAR student came from Marian Catholic College, with Navdeep Birring getting the highest score in Griffith with 95.35.
Mr Piccoli, who spearheaded the school merger, said the results should give the model's critics food for thought.
"Given all the criticism about the model and all the bad publicity, the figures were really quite good," Mr Piccoli said.
"The vast majority of people at the school are getting on with the job - that's the underlying message here."
Mr Piccoli stopped short of saying that the HSC results were due to the merger, however he did say that the figures were an encouraging sign.
"There are some people that are still unhappy with the merger. Maybe they have good reasons to, maybe they don't," Mr Piccoli said.
"However most people are getting on with the job, and I think those results were a real boost for the school."
