The court heard Susanna Bienzobas, 49, was trying to remove the guns from the residence of other people in an attempt to protect them.

Police had been trying to get in touch with the person they believed to have had the guns, however hadn't been able to.

They were heading towards a house in Yenda in October where they believed the guns, when they saw Bienzobas driving down what they called a "back road".

Officers had also attempted to contact her that day in relation to the guns.

Pulling her over to question her, they then searched her car where they found two guns, a bolt action .22 calibre rifle and an air rifle, sitting over the spare tire, half covered over by some carpet.

Police also found a rifle magazine loaded with .22 calibre ammunition, fitting the rifle found in the boot, as well as two packets of bullets.

Checks revealed both firearms were not registered.

Coming before Magistrate Joy Boulos on Wednesday, Bienzobas' legal representative Piers Blomfield outlined her completely clean history.

As a drug and alcohol councillor in town, he said she was otherwise an upstanding citizen, with character references speaking highly of her.

"My ultimate submission, because of the general nature, would be a community corrections order, given her previous good history... and given the short time she actually held the guns," Mr Blomfield said.

Prosecutor Sergeant Jason Dunn said it was an "unusual matter", given that police were looking into and had a search warrant for the guns in the possession of others.

"She's a patsy, and has taken the fall..." Sergeant Dunn explained.

"There were attempts to avoid detection."

Magistrate Boulos said Bienzobas wouldn't get jail, despite two of the charges facing a maximum penalty of 14 years prison time.

"If these guns do fall into the wrong hands we know what happens... [things like] the Port Arthur massacre."

Despite the "very serious" charges, she took into account Bienzobas clean criminal history, her full disclosure of the charges to those who wrote her character references, and her employment.

For the possession of four unregistered firearms, Bienzobas received 18 month community corrections orders, and was fined $500 for possessing ammunition.
