Like the queen piece on the board these girls have thus far proven unstoppable, taking out the MIA regional chess competition putting them in the running for the state title.

Held in Sydney next Sunday, Year 6 students Chloe Zamin, Shania Shipton and Anika Smith are busily preparing under the proud eye of teacher Peter Moraschi, who they've dubbed 'chess master'.

"We are the first girl team to win three-player chess in a long, long time," Anika said.

"Problem solving, critical thinking, and it's just fun to play," Shania explained.

"It's definitely something I am very proud of, being in the first girls team," Chloe agreed.

The chess classes have been held within the curriculum at St Patrick's School, and Mr Moraschi said this year he had seen so much interest from the students.

He is surprised but thrilled with more girls showing enthusiasm in the game than ever before, where traditionally it had been the boys to dominate.

"They have made so much progress in their games through a lot of practice and challenges throughout the year," Mr Moraschi said.

With around 87 kids in the school playing chess, the three have shown they have what it takes to take on state.
