With 48 reported thefts since October 1, police say over half of those have occurred within the last two weeks.
Chief Inspector John Wadsworth says the crimes are ones of opportunity, and says a lot of thefts are from cars that are unlocked, with valuables in full view.
"We have had spikes before, but this is certainly one of the highest reported number of incidents we've seen for Griffith in the last two years," he explained.

"Police are making every effort to investigate each and every incident using forensic examination and resources, as well as obtaining all forms of video evidence."
He said they are also relying on the community to give as much information as they can, but also to stop providing these "opportunists" with the chance to steal.
"We want the community to make it as difficult as possible for these opportunistic thieves by making sure all cars are locked, secured and safe."
