A former Griffith local has been named a Member of the Order of Australia for his services to horticultural sciences.

The University of Sydney's Professor David Guest has been awarded the accolade for his more than 40 years of work and study in the fields of plant pathology and horticultural science.
Professor Guest said he was honoured to receive the accolade and hoped the acknowledgement would help showcase how rewarding a career in agriculture could be.
"To be acknowledged for work that I'm pretty passionate about, it's a very nice feeling," he said.
"If you are at school, agriculture is an incredibly rewarding career."

Professor Guest attended Griffith High School in the 1970s before graduating from the University of Sydney with his PhD in 1983.
He worked at the University of Melbourne for 20 years before returning to the University of Sydney in 2004, where he works at the Sydney Institute of Agriculture.
Professor Guest was also the former president of the Australian Plant Pathology Society between 1999 and 2001 and the Asian Association of Societies for Plant Pathology from 2011 and 2014.
