Police have warned of "harsh consequences" for vandals who damaged the citrus sculptures in the early hours of Monday morning, less than 24 hours after 700 volunteers worked to put them together.

A video on social media, which has been shared over 150 times, shows a number of young people wrenching the fruit off the structures and pelting them at others.
While reported to police first thing this morning, Inspector Kim Traynor has called on the community to help identify those responsible.

"The malicious damage to the sculptures was reported this morning, and police have conducted inquiries but have as yet been unable to identity the offenders," she explained.
"As a result, we have and will be increasing patrols in the area."
She highlighted the fact that despite it seeming like "fun at the time", this kind of malicious damage is actually a criminal offence.
"This kind of damage to the sculptures is classified as malicious damage, and can be punishable by imprisonment."

She urged anyone with information regarding who the people in the video are, to come forward and assist in investigations.

This is not the first time the sculptures have been damaged this way, with four vandals caught and sentenced for similar acts in 2017.
Police called upon those responsible to hand themselves in - with success, and one of the men taking to social media to apologise in the aftermath.
Two of the men were fined $500 each, one was fined $1000, and another was ordered to complete 50 hours of community service.
