The Hampers of Hope program has been nominated for a Primary Healthcare Award, a regional award organised by the Murrumbidgee Primary Health Network (MPHN) which aims to recognise work done to improve health in the region.

The program has been nominated in the Innovation category and Meals on Wheels program coordinator Tennille Valensisi said the nomination came as a shock for the organisation.

"We had no idea that we were even nominated for that," Mrs Valensisi said.

"That was really really special to think that somebody was thinking of us to do that."

Mrs Valensisi said the organisation deals with more than 300 kilograms of food per day as part of the program and the size of the program has tripled since it began two and a half years ago.

"That equates to approximately 85 meals," Mrs Valensisi said.

"There's obviously the need [for the program] in Griffith.

"A lot of people don't realise there is people out there that are struggling... there is definitely people that really need this assistance and we're just in a position that we are just really, really lucky to deliver it."

MPHN board chairwoman Dr Jodi Culbert said she was pleased to see a high amount of innovation on show in the nominations.

"It's clear there are many people, organisations and communities who are dedicated to improving health in our region," Dr Culbert said.

The program is up against Temora Medical Centre's 'Great Quack Quest' for the accolade, which is a campaign run by the centre to draw a new general practitioner to the town.

There are four categories in this year's awards, with the other categories recognising individual contributions to communities, the promotion of health living and the Murrumbidgee Grant program of the year.

The winner will be announced on October 12.
