Both Amelie Borella and her mum Christelle Arnal joined the Griffith City Band 18 months ago knowing next to nothing about the trumpet and clarinet.
But thanks to the support from all those within the band, especially musical director Trevor Peacock, they say the experience of camaraderie is like nothing else.
Looking for her next challenge, Ms Arnal joined the band after trying to learn guitar by herself.
Not finding it the right fit, she went to an Adult Beginners information session and was hooked on the clarinet.
I remember we had this one song, and I remember thinking, I'll never be able to play that. But I found the music the other day, and it was easy - its hard to believe how far I've come.
- Amelie Borella
Amelie, who is learning the piano as well, joined and started the trumpet after beginning lessons at school.
"With sport, you can both play the same thing but not together because of the age groupings," Ms Arnal said.
"But with music, this is something that really brings us together and I love sharing this with her."
Going to the championships was the next step, with both agreeing the best part was getting to hang out with like-minded people.
Coming in third out of five in their division, being in the middle ground gives them the extra incentive to strive for next year.
"When I play with the band, I'm not nervous about performing, which I am with piano exams," Amelie noted.
"It is just so fun playing with friends."
"The feedback was really positive and constructive. I was on a high for two weeks after, the dopamine and adrenaline kept me going," Ms Arnal added.
Highlighting the many positive benefits from learning and playing music, both in the brain as well as socially, they say it's a no-brainer for anyone - join the band!
"What I have gotten from the band - and I'm not naturally musical - I am amazed at how much I've learned," Ms Arnal explained.

"They are always there to help, and I love that they include beginners in the main band as well, you just watch everyone flourish."
And it's the same for Amelie, saying songs she once thought were difficult were now as easy as falling off a log.
"I remember we had this one song, and I remember thinking, I'll never be able to play that. But I found the music the other day, and it was easy - its hard to believe how far I've come."
It will now be up to her sister to join with the flute to make it a family trio.
