The Griffith RSL sub-branch was formed on September 1 1919 and honoured its' centenary with a ceremony at the Cenotaph on Sunday.

RSL member Terry Walsh said it was important to recognise the work the branch has been doing for the past century.

"Not too many organisations get to serve 100 years, especially not an organisation as diverse as the RSL," Mr Walsh said.

"For an organisation as massive as that [the RSL] to still be here in 100 years and still doing the job we started back 100 years ago, [it's] pretty unique I think.

"We're still looking after veterans today and we're looking after veterans families and we're looking after their memory."

Mr Walsh said the decision to celebrate the centenary at the Cenotaph was so the sub-branch could honour the occasion with all the people who died in service of the country.

The sub-branch has 80 current members and sub-branch president Hank Veenhuizen said the branch manages to attract a dedicated group of members.

"It's gone up and down over the years," Mr Veenhuizen said.

"We got the core group which are quite happy to come and help and work and do different things like this."

It has been through the work of the sub-branch's members that has allowed Griffith's military history to remain prevalent and able to be expanded upon.

Mr Walsh said one particular project the sub-branch was proud to complete in the past year was the addition of plaques recognising deceased veterans for their service, with research undertaken by the branch to identify soldiers who were initially forgotten.

It is the duty of the RSL, he believes, to represent the best interests of veterans and ensure their memories are properly honoured.

"Every veteran who is buried in the Griffith cemetery is now recognised every Anzac Day," Mr Walsh said.

"There is no stronger word or voice then those who stick together and work as an organisation and the RSL nationally has always been the voice of the veterans within Australia."
