The surprise packet of the season has been the Under 10 Blackbirds, featuring a number of girls in the first season of tag rugby. After a slow start to the season the Blackbirds, under the guidance of Bethany Parsons, have steadily improved rounding out the regular season with a 25-5 win over the Albury Steamers and a 30-5 win over the Wagga Crows.
The Blackbirds will travel to West Wyalong this week and will face the Cootamundra Bears in an elimination semi-final.
Having knocked the Wagga Crows from top spot a fortnight ago in Griffith the Short Blacks Under 10 continued to build momentum towards the finals series with two impressive wins over the Hay Whipper Snippers, 45-5 and the Albury Steamers 65-0.
The Short Blacks have matured significantly since the opening round back in April, and have developed in to a formidable unit based on trust and patience. The Under 10s will take on the Young Yabbies in the qualifying semi-final.
The Under 12 Blackbirds completed the regular season unbeaten finishing on 89 points out of a possible 90.
In their final game of the season the Under 12s scored a 50-0 win over the fourth placed Tumut Bullants.
Only bonus points separated the first and second in the Under 12s competition, with the Griffith Blacks narrowly missing out on the minor premiership.
The Under 12s have one of the best defensive records in the competition, conceding one try in their past eight games including the 29-0 and 26-0 over the Wagga Crows and Leeton Phantoms respectively.
The Griffith Under 12 will line up against the Crows again this weekend in the qualifying semi-final.
The Under 16s also wrapped up back-to-back minor premierships with a 24-7 win over the Southern Barbarians and going through the regular season unbeaten.
There next match will be against the Leeton Phantoms.
The Griffith Under 12s Whites, along with the Griffith Blacks Under 14s, and the Blackbirds U16s will hang up their boots for the season.
