Murrumbidgee Police District has confirmed a person has died following a head-on collision on the Sturt Highway near Hay this morning.
Chief Inspector John Wadsworth said the deceased person, whose identity has not been confirmed at this stage, was a male and the single occupant of the ute.
"It would appear the Triton utility, driven by the deceased, was traveling west and the truck was traveling east," Chief Inspector Wadsworth said.
"Early indications appear the vehicle may have veered into the path of the truck causing a head-on collision.
"Because of the impact and the truck carrying flammable liquids, the truck caught alight and the fire has since been distinguished by NSW Fire and Rescue."
Chief Inspector Wadsworth said the roads will be closed for a significant time.
"The Hazmat is on scene, detectives and the forensic services are already on scene and a crime scene has been established.
"The driver of the truck suffered minor injuries, he's basically in shock."
NSW Police Media statement said the driver of the utility was a 26-year-old man, who was unable to be revived.
"The driver of the truck, a 60-year-old man, sustained minor injuries," the statement read.
"An investigation has commenced into the circumstances surrounding the crash.
"A report will be prepared for the information of the Coroner."
The Hazmat unit from Leeton is on scene, as well as three RFS units, the SES and police.

A truck driver has been taken to hospital following a collision between a semi-trailer and a ute.
The incident occurred on the Sturt Highway at Glenhope Road, 36 kilometres west of Hay.
Following the head-on collision, both the truck and the ute caught fire.
Crews from the NSW Rural Fire Service and Fire and Rescue NSW were called to the scene.
"There is no longer a fire and it is believed that the truck is carrying flammable materials," a RFS spokesperson said.
According to Live Traffic NSW, the Sturt Highway is closed in both directions and diversions are in place.
"The westbound traffic is being diverted onto the Cobb Highway from Hay to Pretty Pine Road, Balranald Road and Yanga Way to return to the Sturt Highway at Balranald Road," a spokesperson said.
"The eastbound direction is the same in reverse.
"The diversion is suitable for all vehicles...due to the nature of the incident, there is no forecast as to when the highway will reopen."
The flammable materials mean emergency services personnel have been unable to check the condition of the driver of the ute.
NSW Police forensic investigators are currently en-route to the site.
