The Relay for Life is a Cancer Council initiative that involves teams of people raising money in the lead up to an overnight event, where members take turns walking around a track.
With each team having to be represented on the track over the duration of the event by at least one member, the event signifies that "cancer never rests, so neither do we".
Griffith Relay for Life committee member Grant Hearn said despite being just over five months away, it was already being well supported.
"Already 19 teams have registered with 88 participants," Mr Hearn said. "The fundraising has already reached almost $10,000."
Relays are held overnight, with a carnival atmosphere and a tent city set up for those resting.
"Ours is an 18 hour event starting at 3pm on Saturday and finishing at 9am on Sunday," Mr Hearn said.
"Firstly we have the opening ceremony, which highlights those who have survived cancer and those often unsung heroes who are the carers.
"The highlight of the opening ceremony is the Survivors and Carers Walk. This is followed by entertainment as we prepare for our candlelight or Hope ceremony."
The most touching part of any relay, the Hope ceremony is held after the sun goes down.
"This is when we take time to reflect on those we have lost to cancer," Mr Hearn said. "This ceremony ends with our laps of reflection where we walk the track in darkness, illuminated only by the candlelight that pays tribute to those we have lost to cancer."
Throughout the night, the relay doesn't stop - because cancer doesn't stop. A closing ceremony is held on Sunday morning.
"We renew our resolve to continue the fight against all cancers, as well acknowledge those who have inspired us during the event," Mr Hearn said.
"We have our Spirit of Relay awards and the announcement of what is always an incredible fundraising total."
People can register up until the day for the 2019 event at www.cancercouncil.org.au/relayforlife/events/ and searching for Griffith.
