On International Nurses Day on Sunday, Griffith Base Hospital nurses reflect on what it all means.
"It's about multitasking and versatility," registered nurse Donna Newton says.
"Balancing expectations and keeping open minds with different cultural values and understandings," Jane Moschella adds.
"Seeing people go through their journeys and see them come out the other side, and being a part of that," Robyn McKenzie said.
Jane is in the first year of her career, and already loves helping people.
Robyn and Donna have over 30 years combined working at Griffith Base Hospital, and say the job remains "incredibly rewarding".
"You get an insight into people's lives that noone else gets to see," Robyn said.

"And while that is not always the easiest thing, it is certainly a great privilege."
But there is one thing they don't have, a hope for alongside many other nurses: a higher nurse-to-patient ratio.
