Griffith City Council mayor John Dal Broi responded with indignation when independent Kevin Mack said he opposed Griffith Base Hospital redevelopment in favour of his own plans.
Mr Mack instead wants to build a new greenfield hospital in a different location - a vision he shares in common with Member for Murray Helen Dalton.
Mr Mack said a redevelopment was merely a "Band-Aid" solution that wouldn't serve the needs of the community going forward.
But Councillor Dal Broi said it was a slap in the face to all the people in the community who spent years raising $14 million for St Vincent's Hospital, which would work in close cooperation with Griffith Base Hospital.
Cr Dal Broi insisted the current site was the better location for a hospital, which is walking distance from existing heath services as well as the St Vincent's Hospital.
"If anyone tries to put our hospital at risk, I become very defensive," Cr Dal Broi said.
