The Certificate III in Business Administration - Medical is now being offered at TAFE NSW Griffith, aimed at meeting the surging demand for medical receptionist and health practice manager positions state-wide.
A recent TAFE NSW report found 'health practice manager' would be among the top five largest jobs growth areas in the NSW Health and Fitness sector over the next three years, while 'medical receptionist' was ranked eighth.
TAFE NSW Business Administration - Medical teacher Sally Weatherlake, herself a former health practice manager, said not only were jobs plentiful in medical administration, but the work was "richly rewarding".
"We have an ageing population so there is plenty of work available in medical administration and you really feel like you're making a difference," Ms Weatherlake said.
"Some people think it's daggy and boring but the reality is businesses couldn't operate without good administration staff."
Among the areas covered in the six-month, full-time course are units in medical terminology, medical records and accounting, and privacy and confidentiality.
Students learn on a state-of-the-art software platform, which is used by the majority of doctor's surgeries nationally, meaning graduates are industry ready and relevant.
Ms Weatherlake said a diverse range of people were drawn to medical administration, including ex-nurses, trainees and career-changers.
