Yet they are also heartened with the support given to them from the wider community, with phone calls and flowers given in a show of solidarity.

Imam Mohamad Mofreh said they had been praying for those who had lost their lives in the terrible attack.

"We wish to share thanks to each and every one who shares our grief with us," he said.

"I call on officials to not 'close the gate' - their is no difference between us and everyone else.

"Even to our Muslim community: we must not overreact. All of us are created by one - Muslim and non-Muslim alike.

"Islam comes from the word meaning 'peace' and this is our message."

Zia Khan wished to express his thanks for the support already given by the wider Griffith community.

"We are very thankful, we have many people come and express their condolences. 

"It has been announced before, but Griffith is a town of harmony. I hope it can continue like that and from our side, we have nothing against anyone," Mr Khan said.

Imran Sayd said now it is the time to reassure their fellow Muslims they are safe in this community, in consultation with officials like the Griffith police.

"We have been speaking to officials, making sure everyone knows they will be taken care of with respect. This is a chance for us to call upon politicians to stamp out Islamophobia.

"Yes we are disgusted, but we are not shaken," Mr Sayd said.

"We love our town. We love Australia - we are one nation and one family, and we are thankful for the support not just in Griffith but all across Australia."
