Jacob Dominic Barbaro, 19, plead guilty to the charge of drive recklessly/furiously or speed/manner dangerous.
He was driving a black Holden Commodore on MacKay Avenue on January 5 at 11pm when he was seen by police to rapidly accelerate up to 123km/h in a 60km/h zone.
Police were stationed in the area to monitor speed due to the high number of speed-related collisions on the road in the last 18 months.
When they stopped and spoke to Barbaro, he said "120, no way, I did not do 120."
He received a $263 infringement notice for not displaying his green p-plates.
When police spoke to him, they noted his initial denial and "appeared to have no remorse."
Piers Blomfield, Barbaro's legal representative, asked Magistrate Boulos for leniency given his client's acceptance of the charges, remorse, understanding of his actions and completion of the Traffic Offenders Program preempting court orders.
He said Barbaro was driving his parent's car which was unfamiliar to him, and it was this that contributed to the high speed.
Magistrate Boulos, while noting she found being unaware of "the excessive" speed "hard to believe," convicted Barbaro and fined him $300 with a 12 month disqualification, since he had done everything to show his remorse.
She said he was "lucky" to avoid the maximum penalty of imprisonment.
