With eight candidates competing for the twelfth position on council, voters find themselves spoiled for choice.
The candidates, linked to The Area News profiles, as they appear on the ballot paper are:
Voting held on February 16 will be taking place at the following locations from 8am to 6pm:
- Beelbangera Public School
- Griffith North Public School
- Griffith PCYC
- Griffith Public School
- Hanwood Public School
- Lake Wyangan Public School
- Wade High School
- Yenda Public School
- Yoogali Public School
You can also opt for a postal vote and pre-poll will open on Monday, February 4.
Pre-polling is available at the returning officer’s office at 81 Kooyoo Street and Griffith Aboriginal Medical Service on Jondaryan Avenue.
The byelection was made necessary when Paul Snaidero was disqualified from his place representing the community in November 2018.
The disqualification came as a result of Mr Snaidero being found guilty of domestic assault on his then-wife.
Under Section 275(1)e of the Local Government Act 1993, a councillor disqualification lasts for seven years.
With the next ordinary election, slotted for September 2020, this byelection is required from the Act to fill the 18 month time period between.
While debate raged within the community as to whether 12 councillors were needed to run an area the size of Griffith, a council vote saw seven out of 11 councillors opposed to holding a community referendum on reducing numbers until after the byelection.
