James Barraclough took home one of four Summernats’ mullet categories, competing against 40 others in pursuit of the Grand Mullet award.
Judged by staff from Just Cuts and special guest Larry ‘Send It’ Enticer from Canada, James’ “ranga” do’ just lost out to the tender tresses of almost two-year-old Soren ‘Pup’ Zenke as the overall mullet winner.
But that hasn’t put a dampener on his ambitions, with his eyes already on the prize for a hat trick win.
Competing wasn’t something planned, however at the Summernats last year he and some friends heard it announced over the speakers, and James thought he’d give it a shot.
“We were just going through the halls – it was very spur of the moment,” he said.
And not only bragging rights, but taking part in the competition also saw him make some like-minded friends like Adam Bezzina from Blacktown, who took home the Super Majestic Longest Mullet title.
Adam claimed the title with the mullet he had grown for an impressive six-and-a-half years – something which James aspires to do.
So why the mullet? James said he never chose the mullet life, it chose him when a friend decided to give him the iconic cut.
“I saw what he’d done, and I really liked it,” James said.

“I think being a ranga too makes it a little different, and it’s probably why I was chosen as Mr Mullet.”
He says his golden locks draw a lot of attention, with many people stopping him in the street for selfies.
Having the trademark hairstyle for three years, James says maintenance is simple – regular washes, and the best haircuts from two friends keep his mullet in tip-top condition.
