His love of the game has inspired him to travel around the country to attend YuGiOh! tournaments, where fully grown men compete to see who is better at a children’s card game.
But although it may have originally been intended for children, Mr Beecher says the game is no child’s play.
With thousands of cards and countless combinations, the game is a complex interplay of tactics and strategy.
“It forces you to think outside the square, think about the problem you have, and try to solve it in a more creative way than your opponent,” Mr Beecher said.
“Sometimes in a tournament somebody will come up with way to use a single card that nobody else has thought of, and it blows everyone else out of the water.”
Now Mr Beecher is trying to spread his love of the game to Griffith, where he is hoping to start a regular YuGiOh! group at the Griffith Community Centre.
At the moment he is planning to hold it at 7pm on Fridays alongside the existing Trading, Collecting and Gaming Group, which plays Magic the Gathering.
Although Mr Beecher has dabbled in Magic the Gathering, his true passion lies in YuGiOh!, which he picked up while at university.
While YuGiOh! may have a reputation for being one of the nerdiest hobbies out there, Mr Beecher said it’s a game for everybody.
“A lot of the blokes that go to tournaments are the furthest thing from nerds,” he said.
He has met mechanics, electricians, and other tradies who defy the bespectacled nerd stereotype.
YuGiOh! is played by all sorts of people from around the world, and for Mr Beecher it’s a way to meet new and interesting friends from every corner of the globe.
New players interested in giving it a go or seasoned veterans looking for a challenge can call Sean Beecher on 0427 653 838.
