So far about 30 people in Griffith have joined the course which is run by Birrang Enterprise, a group which offers the free temporary classes at different regional centres throughout the year.
This is the third year the course has run in town with classes to continue until February 15.
Learner Cyndi Goolagong said that aside from increasing her opportunities for employment, the course will also help her care for her two children who attend primary school as well as her mother who requires dialysis and her grandmother.
“My nan is getting older now and I would like to drive her around to do her shopping,” Ms Goolagong said.
Mrs Goolagong said her children are especially excited about her learning to drive and potential trips to local swimming spots.
“Because my mum is on dialysis three days a week, if I get my licence I can look for some job opportunities like volunteering at Vinnies which is something that I am really looking forward to,” Ms Goolagong said.
Attendee Joe Ratukula said the improved opportunities for employment motivated him to join the classes.
“Most of the places I have been applying for have asked whether I have a licence,” Mr Ratukula said.
Mr Ratukula said his ideal job would be to find work on a winery.
Birrang driving instructor Lyndal Robb said the classes are full of focused attendees who also bring a dash of good humor.
“Not having to rely on any other transport gives independence, it's not just employment either it’s every aspect of their life that follows on in a positive way,” Mrs Robb said.
“It has a big impact on motivation levels, before (getting a licence) they might find a job they want to do and they realize they can’t get there.”
The course is being held at the Summit Employment and Training Centre located at 86 Yambil Street.
Classes run from 9am three days a week with one-on-one driving lessons available after 1pm, interested residents asked to contact Birrang on 0427 300 604 or reception@birrang.com.au.
