This project is jointly funded by the NSW government and federal government under the Heavy Vehicle Safety and Productivity Program.
The project will be directed by Roads and Maritime Services.
Member for Murray Austin Evans said people in Griffith have been telling him about the dangers of the intersection for years.
“Its not a good intersection, it’s very busy in both directions, you’ve got the southern bypass and a lot of traffic going east-west,” Mr Evans said.
“It’s not at 90 degrees which is a big no no for an intersection, (car drivers) can’t see clearly when they have got to change direction.
“With the rail line here, whenever there is a train going through, cars can’t queue at the railway, the preferred model is lights because that way they can link them in with the rail lights.
“You can see the power-lines, bridge, drain, (but) there’s also a high pressure gas line so it’s a lot of hard work, RMS have done some community consultation already and are looking to finalize a design and that will solve those problems,” Mr Evans said.
An RMS spokeswoman said design work was under way with adjustments to utility services to begin next year, with the project set for completion in 2020.
“Work will involve widening and upgrading all intersection approaches, installing traffic lights and upgrading the existing Irrigation Way bridge structure and requires partnership with road, rail and irrigation authorities,” the spokeswomen said.
“During work on the upgrade there will be changed traffic conditions, including reduced speed zones and traffic control,” the spokeswomen said.

Member for Farrer Sussan Ley said both the RMS and Griffith community had asked for the project to be funded.
“With the Heavy Vehicle Safety and Productivity Program it’s all about safety and trucks, we don’t decide where the funding is going go, we talk to the RMS who are the number one deciders of the what’s the highest priority when it comes to safety.
