The decision to continue Stage one of the redevelopment until December 21 has been met with both praise and consternation from stores.
Griffith City Council announced the extended works on Banna Avenue’s “ugly cousin” after consultation with the street’s businesses, who were expecting a reprieve from the end of November.
Owner of Boheme Beauty Jess Hall says while she understands the end result will be “worth it”, the extension of the works over Christmas will definitely be felt by her and her customers.
“It’s a bit of a ball breaker,” Ms Hall said.
Between graduations, Christmas events and formals, many will experience difficulty especially with parking.
“We have already had a lot of people feel the pinch of the works especially with the parking, and to have it continue over our busiest time of year, it will make it very hard,” Ms Hall said.
“Exies have been kind enough to open up their car park for everyone, but it will still cause a huge inconvenience.”
However retail manager for Axikem Sue Jones said they were “thrilled” to hear that the works were continuing longer than expected.
"We think it is great for the work to continue. They were going to stop for six weeks and now it is only four,” Ms Jones said.
"They are doing an excellent job."
Mayor John Dal Broi thanked business owners, shoppers and motorists for their cooperation.
“Work is progressing really well and as a result of this, as requested by businesses, we’ve decided to push on with the work.”
When the works halt, median strip car parking will be available, yet with no access to the southern side traffic lanes.
Safe pedestrian access points will be available to shops on the southern side of Yambil Street. Current detours will remain in place.
Construction will restart on Monday January 14.
