The new Griffith branch of Rural Australians for Refugees Griffith was paid a visit by national president Marie Sellstrom, who is driving to the different branches.
“It’s quite a drive, but we’ve all got lots of energy because it’s about doing what’s right,” Ms Sellstrom said. “It’s by combing all our objectives together that we become much more focused on what we need to do.”
She spoke with the Griffith branch founder Will Mead, who is passionate about getting children out of detention centres.
She only started the group in August, but has already won the support of the community. About 50 people came to the meeting, including Multicultural Council of Griffith’s Carmel La Roca. “It’s good to see groups like these are springing up in the regions because refugees need support on the ground,” Ms La Roca said.
Ms Mead will hold a vigil tomorrow to mark the end of the Kids Off Nauru campaign.
