The fourth Pink Up Griffith pulled in support from all across the community, which collectively managed to raise over $51,000 for breast cancer nurses through the McGrath Foundation.
The money will help keep nurses in regional areas, including MIA’s only breast cancer nurse Fiona Shields.
Ms Shields is based in Griffith, but she also works in Leeton, Hay, Hillston, Lake Cargelligo and surrounding areas that would otherwise be without any support.
Thanks to the enthusiastic support of the community, Ms Shields will be able to continue working in the areas that need her skills the most.
“Griffith never ceases to amaze me,” Ms Shields said.
“The way the community gets behind any charity is just incredible.”
“This is such a great cause; most people have been touched by cancer in one way or another so to raise $51000 is just incredible.”
Even though this year’s event has just ended, Pink Up Griffith organiser Tony Santolin already has plans to make next year’s even bigger.
“Next year we’re going to get families involved, residential houses, farmers etc. because at the end of the day the more people involved the better,” Mr Santolin said.
“It’s a credit to Griffith that a community gets behind these worthy causes it helps us keep Fiona employed here locally.”
The local event started off as a small fundraising activity at Griffith Real Estate, but since then the whole town has enthusiastically joined in on the fray.
The town had been painted pink, with shopfront windows filled with all manner of pink paraphernalia, including balloons, banners, streamers, and more.
Businesses and community groups held fundraising events through the month of October to help support the effort.
Some of the fundraising events included a Zumba party, a pink socks day, pink trivia, a multicultural festival, a tradies barbecue, a cupcake day, and pink bingo.
