So many people turned up to the unveiling that they quickly ran out of chairs in the first few minutes.
The small island in the middle of Banna Avenue was quickly filled with about 100 people who came to see the official opening.
Rotary member Allan Smith said he was deeply proud of the finished product, which was only possible by the “overwhelming generosity” of the community who pitched in donations and labour.
He also thanked Griffith City Council for providing the stone and the land on which the monument rests.
Mayor John Dal Broi said the monument was a fitting homage to the people who built Griffith.
“I was truly honoured and humbled to be able to unveil the monument together with a pioneer of Griffith Mr Keith McWilliams,” Cr Dal Broi said.
“This monument is a reminder of the progress of Griffith over the years.”
