Mr Sergi flew back to Griffith on Sunday after a week-long visit to Fiji, where he put his skills to work by giving free haircuts to children with disabilities.

“They loved it, and they kept telling me to come back come back to Fiji,” Mr Sergi said.

He was invited to Fiji by Fijian barber Simisi Qalica, who arranged the visit to the school.

Together the two of them gave haircuts, hair products, soccer balls, and Australian guernseys to the delighted kids.

“You can tell from the light in their eyes that they really enjoyed what we did,” Mr Qalica said.

“They said it was the best charity work they’ve ever had - there’s no one that’s ever come to the school providing haircuts.”

The two barbers began their friendship on Instagram, where Mr Sergi reached out to Mr Qalica on a whim.

Mr Qalica was surprised when he received a message out of the blue from a barber in Griffith, but he happily took up the offer to come down to Mr Sergi’s shop and cut some Australia hair.

He enjoyed visiting Tristan’s barber shop so much that he came back a second time and did some free hair cuts for aboriginal children at the Tirkandi Inaburra Cultural and Development Centre in Coleambally.

Mr Sergi said he never would have guessed that his spontaneous Instagram message to a stranger over the internet would lead to a life-long international friendship.

“He did community work in my country, so I thought it would only be fitting I go and do a day’s work in his country,” Mr Sergi said.

“It was something I've always wanted to do and it was really fun.”

The two of them also spent two days in the Fijian capital of Suva, followed by a five day trip around some of the major resorts where they cut yet more hair on the beach.

The hair products used were donated by Red One Australia.
