Despite being only three days old, the new Women’s Shed has already crammed its calendars with activities for the month of November.
Shed founder Kristy Stanley said she wanted to make a safe place for women to meet friends and support one another through the tough times.
“When you’ve got a lot of problems and you can’t go to work you end up becoming isolated,” Ms Stanley said.
“With the Women’s Shed you don’t have to sit alone at home any more, you’ve got a safe place you can go to socialise, meet new friends, and just hang out.”
Ms Stanley herself has battled with mental health problems for past year, and she said she wanted to provide emotional support to other women doing it tough.
Shed president Aimee Gibbs also stressed the importance of having a friendly shoulder to lean on, having suffered from depression and anxiety for 25 years herself.
But Ms Gibbs said that the prospect of growing the shed and building a support network has put a spring back in her step.
“We’ve already got a heap of community support, and I’m excited to see where we can go from here,” she said.
“Having a place where everyone can go and feel included will be really nice and beneficial for a lot of people in town.”
Much like its male counterpart, the Women’s Shed will be open three days a week and will host workshops spanning everything from pedicure to belly-dancing.
Ms Stanley will be running many of them herself, and she has grand ambitions to increase the number of workshops even further.
“The possibilities are endless,” Ms Stanley said.
“We ask our members if they have anything they can teach the rest of us, and we go from there.”
The shed building can be found at 650 Oaks Road Yoogali at Scalibrini Village, which donated the use of a building to the women’s shed.
It will be open on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Sundays from 10am to 3pm for anybody wanting to come in for a chat, and the workshop times can be found on social media.
