Cunial said it was a good time for a change to help even out the workload.
“Last year Dean was captain of the first-grade side and also became president of the club, so it was a pretty heavy workload,” he said.
“I was helping out a bit last season, and everyone felt it would be a good chance to take the step up and have a younger bloke in charge.
“I’m pretty excited about the challenge.”
It was a tough season for the Hanwood side last year as they finished on the bottom of the ladder with just two wins for the season. However, signs are looking up for the club after their round one performance.
“To pick up a win in the first round was good for us,” he said.
“It shows that we are on the right track after a tough season last year.”
With the difficulties of last year in mind, the club has made the decision to bring a coach on board who will help to give the side at all levels some guidance.
“We have brought in Ben McInnes who is helping everybody out,” he said.
“He has really taken the role in his stride and has been a welcome addition to the club.”
The task will be a tough one for Hanwood this weekend as they take on an Exies side who have shown their strength in the first two rounds of the season.
Cunial knows his side will have to be switched on from the first ball if they are going to be successful this weekend.
“Our fielding needs to be switched on from the start because they have a really strong batting line-up and have posted some pretty big scores,” he said.
Exies’ Marc Tucker has made a solid start to the season scoring 120 runs across the first two games of the season.
“We have to get on top of him rather than let him get on top of us,” he said.
