Henderson was one of a host of former NRL players to attend last Friday’s George Maher and Hamish Howard Remembrance Golf Day at Wagga Country Club.
Henderson, a Griffith junior, played 119 NRL games for St George-Illawarra and Gold Coast before coaching Group Nine club Temora for two seasons.
After three years coaching Dapto in the Illawarra competition, including a premiership, Henderson has made the decision to retire.
He said he is looking forward to entering the next stage of his life.
“It’s been a big part of my life,” Henderson said.
“In one way, it’s the end of a chapter but at the same time, I’ve got a young family and they’re the priority now. They’re at an age where hopefully they want to get into a bit of sport, my young bloke’s four and they’re the priority.
“It’s been great but I look forward to the future.”
Henderson, who runs his own landscaping business in Bulli, has his family firmly entrenched in Illawarra.
He said he always enjoys returning to the Riverina for the annual Pillars of Strength golf day.
“It’s always good to come back,” he said.
“It’s a great day, great cause and it’s really good to get behind the cause. Everyone has a good time and few yarns.”
Henderson said he does not get back to Griffith as much as he would like.
“Maybe once a year, twice if we’re lucky. Get back there and see friends and family.”
