Inspector Kim Traynor said police were ‘working hard’ to crack down on the ‘increase’ of thefts from cars across the two weeks, and were also looking into break-ins experienced by businesses in the area.
“In terms of the steal for motor vehicles, we have seen an increase in the last two weeks in Griffith and surrounds,” Inspector Traynor said.
There were six reported cases of thefts from cars this week, with cars broken into from School Street, Wilga Street in Hanwood, West Avenue in Yenda, Lake Wyangan Reserve and foreshore, and Elder Road Griffith.
“We have also had a number of business premises that have been targeted in recent times, and I can assure the community that investigations are ongoing.”
While she says there is a likelihood of the same people being involved in the attacks, due to the nature of the crimes it is difficult to say at this time.
“Some of the cases are similar and some are different. Obviously breaking glass windows is a fairly common way to break in to cars. Police officers are working really hard to them.”
Over the course of the week, two business and two homes were reported to have been broken into.
Wednesday morning around 4am saw a laundromat in Murrumbidgee Avenue hit. Thieves entered by smashing in the front windows and managed to get away with their television.
A service station on Mackay Avenue also around 4am Wednesday morning. Entry was once again gained by smashing in the front windows. An unknown amount of cigarettes was taken from the shop.
A home on Taylor Road had jewellery, a PlayStation, cash, alcohol and a signed Rabbitohs football guernsey stolen when residents were away between Friday October 5 and the following Sunday.
Another home on Cemetery Road in Yenda was broken into between 9.30am and 12pm on Sunday October 7 when the resident was away. among the items stolen was a laptop computer, iPad, and food.
Inspector Traynor urges and reminds people to avoid leaving any belongings and valuables in their cars, even if they are locked, and the windows have been smashed in several cases.
