As the second highest fundraiser of the entire rally, second outright winner, second best presented car, and best father and son team, their efforts set them at the top of the class.
For dad Troy, this makes his 12th year participating, the third with his son Nathan. Raising over $14,000 this year, the father and son duo have personal motivation for helping out Cystic Fibrosis Australia.
“I have a three year old cousin that has been diagnosed with cystic fibrosis,” Mr Campbell said.
“I’ve always done this for the cause, but it makes it more meaningful to know that this money could be helping one of my own.”
As one of four cars from the Griffith area, they were joined by cars from the Browns and Rebetzkes.
And there must be something about those Griffith-based father and son power teams, as David and Robert Brown came in third in the overall highest fundraisers with over $10,000 raised.
“It was great just getting through with the old man, spending that time seeing the countryside was awesome,” Robert said.
“Coming seventh in the rally as well was a great result.”
For the two Rebetzke brothers Shawn and Terry, placing 11th in the rally and raising $4500 was “extremely rewarding” for their first rally together.
“Just with the boys here, they were all doing the rallies so we thought we’d jump on board and help out as well,” Terry said.

“The whole thing was a highlight, the experience is amazing. You meet so many interesting people along the way.”
Last year saw some mishaps for the Campbells, rolling their car on the first day after blowing a tyre.
The only set back this year was right on the last day, with their 2-wheel-drive Toyota Hilux getting a flat, which they attribute to their slip from first place to come second in the overall rally.
“I can’t really think of any one highlight this year, but the whole thing was an amazing experience,” Nathan said.
“We drove past Slim Dusty’s house, which was really cool.”
The Great Escape Rally went from September 9 until 19, starting off in Windsor and ending at Bribie Island via the Great Dividing Range.
The car charity event attracts drivers from all around Australia to participate and enjoy 10 challenging days while travelling through unique and iconic locations in Australia.
