Donated by Griffith’s Shed for Men, it was part of a program which supported and funded nationally by Uncle Toby’s.
Coordinator for Shed For Men Sue Pearce said they were thrilled by the response from the children.
“We put an application for chicken pen and were absolutely over the moon when we got it,” Mrs Pearce said.
“Our own local Griffith Feed and Grain also provided many extras as well to help the kids look after their new chooks, including feeders, drinkers, feed and even a 12 egg incubator.
“Well done especially to Lance Brace who build this amazing shed.”
Lake Wyangan Public School principal Justin Dawson said the kids couldn’t wait to check on the kids when the rocked up to school.
“It’s just wonderful,” Mr Dawson said.
“The kids are racing out each morning to look for eggs. The chooks are different ages, so we have three layers and the others should start in the next few weeks.”
With nine chooks and one lucky rooster, it’s no surprise the children are competing with each other for the best names. When asked what they thought of the chooks, the students gave resounding responses of good, amazing, cool and great.
“They teach us how to be responsible and care after animals,” said year five student Sophie Hilton.
Students from year one and two were looking forward to hatching the eggs with the incubator.
Class four-five G were keen to raise money selling the eggs, the money from which will go into taking care of their feathered friends.
“Sometimes you may lose a plant or animal in the garden, which gives us the opportunity to talk about the life cycle, to help the children become better people,” Mr Dawson said.

“What a fantastic group - the Griffith Men's Shed.
“Over past years they've taken on different little projects and jobs that are a little simply awkward to handle ourselves or on our own, they put their time and experience to them and make our school a better place for the children.
“The new chicken coop is fabulous, thank you!”
